Music at Trinity
Our Director of Music Ministry is Ebert William Landman, Jr. (“Bert”), who received his Bachelor of Music degree in Church Music, magna cum laude, from Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music, Winchester, Virginia in 1981, with a major in organ and minors in piano, harpsichord and voice, and in 1983 received a Master of Music degree in Church Music, with distinction, from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey, with a concentration in organ and a minor in choral conducting. He maintains professional memberships in the Association of Anglican Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and the Royal School of Church Music. He comes to us with broad experience as a performing artist, liturgist, composer, conductor of both children’s and adult choirs, and organizer of activities involving both the visual and the performing arts. Music is one of the traditional strengths of Trinity Church and is an integral part of all Sunday services. Our new Director of Music, Bert Landman leads the choirs of the parish (details below) in liturgies throughout the program year (September-June), which include many special services. The choirs sing at the 10:00 am service of Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings, in addition to major feasts and the services of Choral Evensong at 5:00 pm on the first Sunday of each month (October-June). On Christmas Eve at 11:00 pm and on Easter morning prior to the 10:00 a.m. service, a Choral Eucharist is offered with choir and orchestra. The choirs are also augmented by instrumentalists for the principal liturgies at Christmas and Easter. The music ministry at Trinity Church seeks to fill every heart with the sound of God's peace and joy. Through the finest sacred music of four centuries, we aim to provide an ever-expanding vocabulary to proclaim God's eternal message. Careful preparation and weekly rehearsals by the musicians of our parish support our commitment to offer our fullest and most enriching praise to God in the highest. The congregational experience of this splendid music is enriched by informative comments on the day's music included in the bulletin each Sunday. Choral Evensong On the first Sunday of each month (October-June) at 5:00 pm, the Trinity Singers offer the service of Choral Evensong to the Greater Hartford community. A unique service sung by choirs throughout the worldwide Anglican communion, Evensong offers a contemplative worshipping experience in a peaceful environment. The choral parts of the service, sung by the choir, include selections of beautiful music from the sixteenth century to the present day. Throughout the year, Evensong at Trinity is attended not only by parishioners, but also by many visitors who cherish this exquisite service.
Trinity Choir The Trinity Choir is a four-part SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) adult choir that sings for the 10:00 am service of Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings throughout the program year (September-June) in addition to singing at major feasts. The Trinity Choir also forms the core of the Trinity Singers for the monthly services of Choral Evensong. The repertoire of the choir consists of works from the sixteenth century to the present day, including large-scale choral works with orchestra sung at Christmas and Easter. The Trinity Choir always welcomes new members! Rehearsals take place on Thursday evening, 7:00-9:00 pm, and on Sunday morning at 9:00 am. If you would like to be part of the ensemble, please contact the Director of Music, Bert Landman, in the parish office at (860) 527-8133 ext. 205, or via e-mail at blandman@trinityhartford.org to arrange for an interview. Trinity Chorister Program The Trinity Choristers were founded in September 2000 and are now considered to be one of the leading new chorister programs in the Northeast. The choristers, all aged 6-15, sing alongside the adult Trinity Choir at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service throughout the program year (September-June). Rehearsals take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Members of the Trinity Chorister Program come from throughout the Greater Hartford region, with some traveling significant distances to be part of this exceptional program. Choristers learn not only singing and general musical skills but also the valuable place of high quality music and musical performance in a sacred setting and in their own lives. The choristers also develop a strong collegial sense of team spirit in a non-competitive environment, which often leads to long-lasting friendships. The repertoire the choristers sing includes works from the sixteenth century to the present day, and centers on music written with young voices in mind. During the course of the year, the choristers sing works of composers such as Bach, Britten, Byrd, Mozart, Palestrina, Stanford and Vaughan Williams, to name a few. In addition to their service schedule at the church, the choristers also have the opportunity to attend summer programs of the Royal School of Church Music in America (RSCM) and participate in regional and national choir festivals. During the summer of 2004, the choristers sang for the principal liturgies on Connecticut Day (August 8) at the National Cathedral in Washington DC; in the summer of 2006, they toured the UK to celebrate their fifth year, singing services at Bristol and St. Alban's Cathedral and a concert in Salisbury Cathedral. Admission to the Trinity Chorister Program is by audition and open to all children aged 6-13. Auditions take place throughout the year. Those interested in auditioning should contact the Director of Music, Bert Landman, in the parish office at (860) 527-8133 ext. 205 or via e-mail at blandman@trinityhartford.org Trinity Singers The Trinity Singers provide an opportunity for experienced adult singers in the Greater Hartford region to participate in Trinity’s monthly service of Choral Evensong, with a limited rehearsal schedule. The rehearsal schedule typically involves attendance at the Thursday rehearsal prior to the Sunday afternoon service, which is also preceded by a rehearsal. The core of the Trinity Singers includes the Trinity Choir. The Trinity Singers’ repertoire will include many of the great choral works of the Anglican tradition written specifically for the unique service of Choral Evensong. Information on the repertoire to be sung can be found in the Choral Music Schedule. If you are interested in being part of this exciting new ensemble, please contact the Director of Music, Bert Landman, in the parish office at (860) 527-8133 ext. 205 or via email at blandman@trinityhartford.org to schedule an interview. Music & Arts Series The Trinity Music & Arts Series presents monthly events throughout the program year (September-June), including concerts by many distinguished visiting artists. The annual brochure is published in August. The Music & Arts Series is funded by an annual appeal which is mailed to Trinity parishioners and friends. Music Program volunteer assistants In addition to the activities of the choirs, there are many other ways to be involved in the music ministry and we always welcome new people to participate. Organs Trinity is blessed to have two splendid organs, each of which fulfills a unique role. The gallery organ built by Holtkamp of Cleveland, Ohio, is the primary organ for most liturgies. Situated in the choir loft on the west wall of the church, its specification includes the horizontal Trompette en chamade. In the nave is the one-manual and pedal Von Beckerath mechanical action organ. This beautiful instrument is used to accompany the psalms at the earlier Sunday service and the services of Evensongs sung by the choristers on the Thursdays in Lent. The Von Beckerath organ is also played on occasion for the preludes for services and in special liturgies, including weddings and funerals that are help in the Chapel. In the 2004-2005 program year the Nave organ will also be heard in Collegium concerts for the Music & Arts Series, as its tonal quality is especially well suited for music of earlier periods. The (K)navesThe (K)naves, the parish drama production group, presents several plays a year, as well as a dramatic reading of the Gospel on Palm Sunday and other occasional events. The (K)naves welcome those who would enjoy acting in their productions or working with sets, costumes, or lighting. Music & Arts Events |
